Absa and Shell Launch New Fuel Rewards Partnership

For many South Africans, filling up their cars has become a stressful experience. Every time petrol prices rise, it hits wallets hard, whether it's for families, small businesses, or daily commuters. But now, there’s some good news: one of the country’s biggest banks, Absa, has joined forces with Shell, a major global fuel brand, to help motorists save more every time they refuel.

Absa Rewards and Shell have partnered to include nearly 600 Shell service stations in Absa’s loyalty program. This means customers can now earn rewards from both their bank and Shell at the same time, a kind of “double dip” on savings that’s being welcomed by financial experts.

Here’s what this means in everyday terms: If you’re an Absa customer and also signed up with Shell’s V+ loyalty program, you can stack your rewards when you buy fuel. So, instead of getting points or cash back from just one place, you get benefits from both, all in one go.

The perks are clear. Depending on your Absa Rewards tier, you can get up to 30% cashback on fuel. On top of that, Shell V+ members can get up to 50 cents back per litre instantly. And if you buy anything inside Shell Select convenience stores, you could earn up to another 2.5% cashback.

This partnership couldn’t come at a better time. With fuel costs constantly rising and household budgets tight, finding ways to make every rand count is crucial. What makes this deal even better is how easy it is to use. No complicated steps or long waits for your rewards. Just make sure you’re registered on both programs, scan your Shell V+ card or app before paying, and use your Absa debit or credit card to pay.

While the process is simple, the impact is big. It shows how banks and fuel companies are moving beyond just offering services, they’re creating ecosystems that reward customers for their loyalty and spending habits.

This also heats up competition between banks and fuel brands as they fight to keep customers. Loyalty is now a form of currency, and the battle for attention is happening both at petrol stations and inside banking apps.

Of course, there are some limits. Absa caps fuel rewards at R5,000 of fuel spend per month, so if you fill up a lot, you might hit a limit on cashback. Also, Shell’s rewards appear instantly, but Absa pays out rewards at the end of the month.

Still, for many people who spend a lot on fuel each month, this partnership offers a real financial boost. More importantly, it shows how brands are adapting to the tough economic realities South Africans face, creating smart partnerships that bring genuine value.

In tough times, every rand saved matters. And with Absa and Shell working together, filling up your tank just got a little easier on your wallet
