Andile Nqandela: Engineering Industrial Excellence Through Local Innovation and Leadership

Andile Nqandela is a South African mechanical engineer, entrepreneur, and industrial leader whose work sits at the intersection of engineering excellence and African industrial advancement. He is the Founder and Managing Director of Brimis Engineering, a Middelburg-based company specialising in industrial valves and pumps, serving key players in South Africa’s mining and energy sectors, including Eskom, Exxaro, Anglo American, and South32.

With a strong technical foundation in mechanical engineering and ongoing MBA studies at Henley Business School, Nqandela began his career at Eskom as a Systems Engineer, where he gained hands-on experience in large-scale energy infrastructure. This early exposure laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial path, which he formally pursued in 2013 with the establishment of Brimis Engineering.

Under his leadership, Brimis Engineering has grown into a recognised industrial services company, earning national recognition as a Top 40 National Gazelle in 2017 and placing as the Eskom BIC 1st Runner-Up the same year. His work has also received global acknowledgment, including selection for the MIPAD 100 list of Most Influential People of African Descent and recognition as one of “Mining’s Young Guns,” highlighting his growing influence in the mining and engineering space.

Beyond business growth, Nqandela is widely regarded as a voice for industrial transformation and black excellence within engineering. He consistently advocates for the development and inclusion of local technical talent, emphasising that sustainable economic growth in South Africa depends on empowering homegrown engineers and innovators. Through both his leadership and public commentary, he continues to position engineering not just as a technical field, but as a tool for economic participation and national development.

At the core of his leadership approach is a strong belief in building systems that outlast individual success. Nqandela has often highlighted the importance of creating industrial capability rooted in local knowledge, skills transfer, and long-term investment in people. This philosophy has shaped Brimis Engineering into more than a service provider, but a contributor to South Africa’s broader industrial resilience.

His journey also reflects the realities of entrepreneurship within highly technical and capital-intensive sectors, where credibility, consistency, and operational excellence are essential for survival and growth. By navigating both corporate engineering environments and entrepreneurial risk, he represents a generation of professionals redefining what it means to build and scale engineering firms in Africa.

As Brimis Engineering continues to expand its footprint within the mining and energy ecosystem, Nqandela remains focused on sustainable growth, strategic partnerships, and deepening impact within critical infrastructure sectors. His trajectory signals a continued commitment to advancing industrial capability while ensuring that African engineering firms play a leading role in shaping the continent’s economic future.
