Long before she became a respected force in South Africa’s hospitality industry, Mumsy Khoza wore a nurse’s uniform. That beginning is not a footnote in her story. It is the foundation.
Trained in Nursing Education and Community Health, with additional qualifications in midwifery and surgical operating technique, Mumsy’s earliest professional identity was rooted in service. Healthcare demanded discipline, empathy, precision, and calm under pressure. Those qualities would later reappear in boardrooms, business decisions, and hospitality developments.
Today, she is widely recognised as co-owner of Hoyohoyo Hotels and Resorts and as a committed philanthropist. Yet at the centre of her journey is something consistent and deeply personal, care. Where nursing focused on patients, hospitality focuses on guests. In both spaces, dignity matters. Attention to detail matters. Human connection matters.
For more than 52 years, Mumsy has been married to Dr Reuel J Khoza, one of South Africa’s most respected business leaders and thinkers. Their partnership reflects more than longevity. It represents alignment in values, particularly around integrity, empowerment, and service. In 2019, those values were formalised through the establishment of the Reuel and Mumsy Khoza Foundation, an initiative focused on education, leadership development, mentorship, and social impact. The foundation reflects a belief that opportunity must be extended beyond personal success. It must circulate.

Before Hoyohoyo became a recognised brand, Mumsy developed her business instincts within the Protea Hotel Group, refining her expertise in sales, customer relations, and business development. She later stepped into entrepreneurship, owning and managing a Chicken Licken franchise and expanding further by operating an Excel Petroleum service station. These ventures required operational discipline, financial acumen, and hands-on leadership. They positioned her not as a symbolic figure beside enterprise, but as a builder in her own right.
The founding of Hoyohoyo Hotels and Resorts marked a defining chapter in her career. Hoyohoyo, meaning celebration in Xitsonga, captures the spirit of the brand. It is hospitality rooted in African identity. Under her leadership, properties expanded across Chartwell in Johannesburg, Hazyview, Machadodorp, and other parts of Mpumalanga. Each property reflects intentional design, cultural authenticity, and modern hospitality standards. Angel’s View Hotel in Graskop stands as the flagship development. Perched along the Panorama Route, it has become a destination for both local and international travellers.
Mumsy Khoza’s story is also shaped by early experiences of being raised across multiple households, a cultural practice of shared caregiving that cultivated adaptability and emotional intelligence. Education later became a turning point in her life, expanding her worldview and reshaping her sense of possibility. That understanding informs much of her philanthropic focus today. As a mother to two entrepreneurial daughters, Nkateko and Munene, she represents generational empowerment in motion.

Mumsy Khoza has built more than businesses. She has built structures that create belonging, opportunity, and cultural pride. Her legacy is not confined to buildings or titles. It lives in empowered communities, educated youth, and spaces where dignity is not optional.
In an era where leadership is often defined by visibility, her story reminds us that influence can be steady, intentional, and enduring.
