One thing that always stands out to me about entrepreneurs is their ability to act when they see an opportunity. This mindset has solved countless problems because the world needs problem-solvers more than it needs constant complainers. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with a man who noticed a glaring gap in the African market, there was no premium African cigar brand. From that observation, Kamal Moukheiber, CEO of Bongani Cigars, acted - and the results speak for themselves.

From starting with a small team in Mozambique to now building a larger operation that creates opportunities for locals, Kamal’s journey is one of vision, action, and meticulous craftsmanship. As he branches out into South Africa, his goal is clear, to increase his brand’s footprint while catering to the sophisticated tastes of Mzansi’s cigar lovers.

When asked what inspired him to start Bongani Cigars, Kamal shared, “I was living in Mozambique when, by coincidence, I came across the biography of Roberto Mondavi, the founder of the US wine industry. That gave me the vision, why is there no African cigar? I decided to launch the first African cigar brand.” This entrepreneurial spark reflects the mindset of identifying gaps in the market and acting decisively, a philosophy that has defined Kamal’s journey.

In a crowded cigar industry, Bongani Cigars distinguishes itself through a combination of craftsmanship, sourcing, and brand philosophy. “We are the first, or quasi-only African cigar brand, which gives us a unique and privileged position,” Kamal explained. “We hired a top cigar master from the Dominican Republic, who moved to Mozambique to train our team of cigar rollers to the same high standard. He remains our head of production to this day.” This dedication to quality ensures that each cigar meets international standards while showcasing the best of African craftsmanship.

Bongani Cigars currently offers four distinctive vitolas, each designed with a particular experience in mind:

  • Robusto: The most common size, equivalent to the Partagas D4.

  • 458 Gordo: A short, thick cigar, ideal for those with limited time but a desire for a rich experience.

  • 658 Longo: Long and thick, perfect for social gatherings and extended enjoyment.

  • Lancero: Long and thin, highly aromatic, and part of a niche size that is regaining popularity among aficionados.

“The thinking behind these selections is to balance versatility with tradition, catering to both seasoned smokers and newcomers seeking a premium African cigar experience,” Kamal added.

Quality is at the heart of Bongani Cigars. Kamal sources tobacco from some of the best producers globally, blending African and non-African leaves. Meticulous processes of curing, aging, and blending ensure each cigar maintains the brand’s signature taste and consistency.

“Tobacco is a highly controlled material, so operations, cash flow, and tax compliance are ongoing challenges,” Kamal admitted. Yet, these challenges have honed the team’s operational discipline and reinforced the importance of quality control.

Bongani Cigars caters primarily to men aged 30 to 60, residing in Africa and occupying the upper echelons of income. “We’ve noticed evolving preferences, with a growing appetite for African-made luxury products and an appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each cigar,” Kamal said. This insight has allowed the brand to position itself as a premium African offering with global standards.

Beyond premium quality, Bongani Cigars integrates social responsibility into its operations. “We provide high-skilled jobs, pay very well, and offer free six-month training until employees reach high commercial levels,” Kamal shared. This approach empowers the local workforce, builds expertise, and strengthens community ties - a cornerstone of the brand’s philosophy.

Bongani Cigars is now entering the South African market, with direct-to-consumer offerings via their website, www.bonganicigars.co.za, including same-day delivery in Johannesburg. “Our aim is to bring the Bongani Cigars experience to South Africa, offering the same premium quality and craftsmanship that has defined our brand in Mozambique,” Kamal said. This expansion marks a significant milestone in the brand’s growth and demonstrates Kamal’s vision of creating an African cigar legacy.

Kamal Moukheiber’s journey with Bongani Cigars is a prime example of identifying market gaps, acting decisively, and combining vision with operational excellence. For corporate leaders and aspiring entrepreneurs, his story serves as a reminder that innovation, craftsmanship, and community impact can coexist while building a profitable and respected brand. Bongani Cigars is not just a product, it is an African success story rolled into every cigar.
